Redcar Athletic v Bishop Auckland

Recap

Bishops experienced a largely miserable evening in the wind and rain at Redcar as the home side exploited the conditions much better than the two blues.

A pair of Donny Holdsworth goals separated the sides at the break leaving Bishops chasing the game.  His first came on 15 minutes when a long wind-assisted throw-in found the midfielder and he made no mistake drilling the ball low to the right of Catterick.  Catterick made two diving saves to temporarily keep the score down before he was again beaten just after the half-hour mark as Holdsworth made space to fire into the far corner.

Bishops rarely got their swift passing game together and created nothing of note as the halftime whistle came, giving a chance to regroup and try and play their way back into the game kicking with the win.  A spirited start to the second half saw Giles denied as he stretched for the ball in a one-on-one with Norton and Johnson was just behind a cross-field ball with a clear strike on goal.

Despite dominating the ball, as Redcar had also done in the opening period, Bishop’s closest efforts were restricted to in-swinging corner kicks, Norton almost caught out on a couple of occasions.  Uncharacteristically Craig Gott was shown a red car for a reaction to a Redcar challenge with ten minutes left, but three minutes later Johnson raced onto a through ball and tapped the ball past Norton to give Bishops hope of a late rescue job.

In a chaotic finale, Johnson was then giving his marching orders as the referee deemed him guilty of dissent to his assistant, despite the forwards’ protestations that he was shouting at his own player.  Despite being down to 9 men Bishops almost snatched an equaliser when another corner was headed onto the bar from Redcar substitute Garbutt.  Danni Lay was sent up top to create havoc in the final seven minutes of added time, but the home side held out to inflict a sixth league defeat of the season on the Bishops.
