It is with great sadness that we report the passing of ex-player Ron Fryer who has died aged 86.
Ron was on the books at Newcastle United and had been an England schoolboy international before moving to the Bishops’ in the 1953/54 season. He made his first Amateur Cup appearance for the team at Wembley in the1954 Final against Crook Town as a late replacement for regular left back Tommy Stewart, who returned for the replays at Newcastle and Middlesbrough.
In season 1954/55 Ron played in the Bishops’ team that won 4-2 at Crystal Palace in the FA Cup second round.
Ron was right back in the 1956 Amateur Cup Final 1-1 draw against Corinthian Casuals but injury again meant that he was replaced by Dave Marshall in the replay. After the replay victory Seamus O’Connell generously gave Ron his Cup winners medal.
Ron later played for Crook Town with whom he won England international caps, and for Stanley United.
