Seaham Red Star: Jennison, Baggs, Sayer, Bott, Donnelly, Nelson, Patterson, Hailes, Lennox, Anderson, Robinson
With just two home games remaining Bishops looked to win for just a third time in the league at Heritage Park this season to ease any potential relegation worries, but never really looked like putting mid-table ‘Red Star’ under any sustained pressure in another tame display.
The only goal of the game was scored by Sayer for the visitors mid-way through a first half that contained few clear-cut chances. A deep cross from the right was powered past Liversedge from several yards out giving the Bishops stopper no chance. The only real goalmouth action that occurred before the goal was after 2 minutes which saw Seaham come close when a goal bound effort by Lennox was blocked and cleared for a corner.
Waters had a good chance for Bishops shortly after going behind but sliced his close-range effort over the bar. On 38 minutes ex-Bishop player Bott fired in a low short which Liversedge spilled but thankfully for the hosts the keeper responded quickly to thwart Robinson’s follow up effort from a few yards out. HT 0-1.
The onus was on the home side to up the tempo but this didn’t happen with both sides limited to long range efforts that never caused either goalkeeper to get their kit dirty. The introduction of Coleman and Banks with 20 minutes to go did spark some life into the two blues, the latter showing glimpses of his dribbling qualities. Whitfield did have a sight of goal on 81 minutes following some neat build up play but his shot from inside the area bobbled across goal with no one able to follow up in the box.
Seaham were able to sit on their lead in the closing stages as Bishops enjoyed plenty of the ball but other than another Whitfield effort that fizzed just wide, the home support were again sent home in sombre mood.
