The upcoming sportsman’s/presentation evening at Heritage Park has seen an enforced substitution in guest speaker with Chris Sutton, called up for the Scottish National Team, well television duties, being ably replaced by Welsh legend, Dean Saunders.
Having made 75 appearances for the Welsh National Team, Saunders is a great replacement for Sutton, and with stories to tell from his time spent playing for the likes of Derby County, Liverpool and Aston Villa, whilst also having spells in Turkey (with Galatasaray in 1995-96) and in Portugal (with Benfica in 1998-99).
During his playing career Saunders was a then-English record signing when joining Liverpool for £2.9 million in July 1991, partnering his Welsh strike-partner, Ian Rush, Whilst at Anfield Saunders would help the club win the 1992 FA Cup before becoming the first Red to score four goals in a European fixture, in a 6-1 win over Kuusysi Lahti in the UEFA Cup in September 1991.
September 1992 saw him become Aston Villa’s record signing at £2.5 million, scoring twice on his home debut, against…..
Alongside Dwight Yorke, Saunders led Villa to a runners-up spot in the innaugural Premier League campaign losing out to Manchester United before leading them to success in the 1994 League Cup, scoring twice in a 3-1 win against…..
His one season with Gala, in Turkey, would see him immortalise himself in Gala folklore, scoring in both legs of the Turkish Cup final against rivals Fenerbahce, only goal of the first leg and the equaliser in the second, his manager in Turkey, former Liverpool boss, Graeme Souness, who he also played under when in Benfica.
Since hanging up his boots Saunders spent seven years, between 2008 and 2015, managing a number of clubs taking Wrexham to the play-offs as well as taking in a spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers, among others.

Dean Saunders will be the guest speaker, alongside comedian John Stiles, for Bishop Auckland’s sportsman/presentation evening at Heritage Park – taking place on Friday 10 May from 7pm till late, tickets are on sale now priced £18 each (or £150 for a table of ten, which includes hot food).
