On-loan keeper Edward Wilczynski kept Bishops in the game against potential League Champions and FA Vase Finalists Morpeth on a cold, windy and wet night at Heritage Park. A minutes silence was held in memory of formed Bishops player Frank Palmer, a member of our 1950 FA Amateur Cup team who recently passed away. The game couldn’t have started better for Bishops when after only four minutes Scott McCarthy laid the ball on for Andrew Johnson to fire home his 22nd league goal of the season.
However Morpeth looked dangerous on the break and nearly equalised when a goalkeeper Wilcznski pounced on a loose ball on the line and was lucky not to get injured when the Morpeth right back followed through and clearly kicked him when he had smothered the ball. He quickly recovered and shortly after made a good save from a shot from the impressive Morpeth forward line. However on 21 minutes Morpeth forward Callum Patton beat two Bishops defenders to fire the ball home under the diving Bishops keeper scoring his 18th league goal of the season.
Bishops kept pressing Morpeth and on 21 mins a corner by Griffiths was slotted home by Arjun Purewal making it 2-1 to Bishops. Bishops defence was kept busy in the closing stages of the first half and they went close twice when a deflected shot narrowly went wide for a corner and Wilczynski palmed another attempt onto the post which Hoganson put out for a corner. Half time 2-1.
Morpeth had the ever increasing wind behind them in the second half and on 54 minutes Keith Graydon scored a great goal from 25 yards to level the scores. Morpeth gained in confidence and when Bishops lost the ball in midfield on 63 minutes a quick breakaway was halted when Wilczynski made a great save from a powerful shot.
On 77 minutes Bishops got a free kick on the edge of the box when Johnson was fouled and his free kick rattled the bar. However a minute later McCarthy put Bishops in the lead and Bishops saw the game out to take a well-earned 3 points in this hard fought game.
