Over the last week we have seen good and bad from the team; firstly a great performance against a good Consett side – we have been threatening to rack up a big score over the last few games and last Wednesday we gave a really good performance with some of our attacking play as good as you will see at this level. Andrew Johnson again showed why he is a top striker with a clinical display. The whole team played well though and deserve credit for a good performance
Move on 3 days and our performance couldn’t have been any worse; we gave away 3 very poor goals defensively and gave ourselves too much to do to get back into the game. I felt we played into RCA’s hands by pumping the ball up to their 2 big centre halves instead of using our width and pace to trouble them and so we got what we deserved! Nothing!
We must eradicate the early goals that we concede as it gives us an uphill battle to get back into game. We must also try and address our away form as if we are going to improve we need to pick up points away from home. This has been a problem this year (our home form is second best in the league so if we get few more away wins we would be pushing right up at top of league). I feel playing away should actually suit us as the pace we have in the side is such that we can counter attack teams very quickly but we have to build a solid foundation to start from and that means being more alert as a team defensively in the opening period of the game.
Tonight’s game will be a very tough one; I personally think Morpeth are the best side we have played this season so far and must congratulate them in qualifying for the semi-finals of the FA Vase and we wish them all the best for that game. I feel we can get a positive result tonight if we apply ourselves properly and I’m sure the players are looking to put Saturday behind us with a good performance.
