Bishop’s FA Cup journey was ended last night with a thumping 5-2 defeat to fellow Northern League side Consett, a stark contrast to last season journey in the cup. On a bright, sunny summers evening at Heritage Park the Bishops made on team change from the side that played Consett last Saturday with Alex Francis incoming for the suspended Matty Moffatt.
It was the Blues who made the better start and within 8 minutes were one goal to the good, Michael Hoganson hitting a powerful low free kick from 25 yards out past Knight in the Consett goal.
Knight then spilled a cross in the 22nd minute to give Bishop an unnecessary corner, from which Daryl Hall rose and headed powerfully towards goal the header was blocked on the line but Alex Francis reacted quickest to stab home Bishops second goal of the evening.
Consett nearly made the dream response to going 2-0 down when in the 23rd minute a rasping shot was well saved by Robinson at full length to protect Bishops lead.
In the 34th minute Alex Francis was caught on the ball on halfway allowing a speedy Consett break, Robinson did well to save 2 consecutive shots but could not prevent the third and final shot from reaching the net, goal scored by Michael Sweet to make the score 2-1 to Bishop.
2 minutes later the scores were level when Michael MacKay broke free from the Bishop defence and shot low in to the Bishop net.
Bishop were now struggling to keep up with the slick, quick interplay from Consett and on the stroke of half time Consett got the goal that was to put them ahead in the tie, Michael MacKay again with his second goal of the night to put Consett 3-2 to the good.
They was still time for Daryl Hall to power a header off the frame of the goal.
HT – Bishop Auckland 2 – 3 Consett AFC
Consett started the second half the better side and had two quick chances to extend their lead further, which they did in the 55th minute when Shaun Ryder rolled the ball in to the bottom hand corner of the Bishop net for Consett’s fourth goal of the night.
Ten minutes later Bennett struck a powerful shot which was well saved by Knight in the Consett goal, the rebound fell to Goundary but the ball was squirmed clear.
On 75 minutes Consett added number five when Michael Sweet had freedom of the Bishop penalty box to slot home his second of the night.
No further goals were added and Bishop went crashing out of the FA Cup, attention now turns to the league with the visit of Newcastle Benfield this coming Saturday.
